| Introduction to Wavelets and Wavelet Transforms:A Primer
|
Update Link / Bad Link? |
|
This primer presents a well balanced blend of the mathematical theory underlying wavelet techniques and a discussion that gives insight into why wavelets are successful in signal analysis, compression, dection, numerical analysis, and a wide variety of other theoretical and practical applications. It fills a gap in the existing wavelet literature with its unified view of expansions of signals into bases and frames, as well as the use of filter banks as descriptions and algorithms. This page contains information on the book along with link to Amazon.com for purchse.

| A Wavelet Wading Pool

Update Link / Bad Link? |

The paper attempts to give a beginner an understanding of the wavelet transform, by practical application of the wavelet techniques to image compression. The Haar Wavelets are considered and applied to this problem, and the difficulties analyzed. In an attempt to change the artifacts seen in the Haar decomposition, a basis proposed by Richard Bartels is applied and experimented with as well. Both bases turn out to introduce too many artifacts into the image to challenge the JPEG encoding, but the COE basis produces better results than the Haar basis as expected.

This code implements a wavelet transform-based image coder for grayscale images. The coder is not the most sophisticated - it's a simple transform coder - but each individual piece of the transform coder has been chosen for high performance. The coder is quite effective, despite its lack of more sophisticated features such as zerotrees. It is designed to be a foundation upon which more sophisticated coders can be built- there's no need to reinvent the wheel if you're working on only one aspect of the coding process.

This paper explores the application of wavelet transforms to equations rather than data sets. Examples are given for the diffusion, Burgers, Poisson and Navier-Stokes equations, which are formally integrated by the method of characteristics. It is also shown that even-indexed Gaussian wavelets decompose a function into the local spectral contributions to its amplitude as well as to its variance.
